Bar och kollade det där med bromsröret hos Fagers idag, för att få en uppfattning om hur mycket det kommer att kosta. Tanken måste ner, nipplar på oken lossas med mera. Gammal bil, osäker diagnos, oklar prognos sas. 

Domen är mellan 3000-1000 men troligen högst 5000. Muntert. Man kan väl iofs göra det själv, men det är ett djävla bök och man måste ha tillgång till lyft. 

Ett förslag var att själv se om nipplarna på bromsoken klarat sig, eller om det måste till nytt bromsok. Så jag får väl kolla det i helgen. 

Jamen då har jag fixat några saker av dem som underkändes på besiktningen. Bromsbelägg och positionslyktan. Den senare var ju vansinnigt enkelt att fixa, bromsbeläggen var faktiskt också rätt enkla att fixa.

Med Reffen kom en bra instruktionsbok och det finns massor med klipp att kolla på på Youtube om att bryta bromsbelägg, men i princip var det bara att:

1. Ta bort däcket.
2. Bänd loss låsfjädern med en skruvmejsel.
3. Tryck tillbaks bromskolven så långt du kan med en polygrip eller något att bända med. Jag kom inte åt med min polygrip, så jag använde en kniv för att försiktigt skjuta tillbaks kolven.
4. Avlägsna dammskydden på styrbultarna som sitter i bakkanten upp- och nertill på bromsoket.
5. Lossa styrbultarna med torx typ T45 eller så. Grova i alla fall. De behöver lossas helt och skjutas ut en bit men behöver inte tas ur helt och hållet. Använd något att peta med för att ’skjuta’ ut bulten. Man får skruva ett antal varv, 10-15 kanske, men det är svårt att veta när de är loss bara genom att skruva. Jag skruvade i typ en kvart innan jag insåg att en minut hade räckt.
6. Dra oket från bromsskivan. En gummiklubba eller en plasthammare och något att bända lite med kan vara bra. Se bara till att inte oket faller handlöst eftersom det ända som då tar emot smällen är bromsslangen.
7. Ta loss de gamla beläggen. Något att slå lätt med eller bända med kan vara bra. De kan sitta fast lite grand.
8. Lägg de nya beläggen i oket som de gamla satt. Det kan vara lite klurigt att få plats när du försöker sätta tillbaks oket, men det går. Lite 5-56 eller liknande så glider det lättare. Det kan också vara lättare att sätta de nya beläggen på bromsskivans ok istället, men se till så att allt hamnar rätt när oket förs på. Tänk också på att det inre belägget har metalguider som ska in i kolvens cylinder. Vet inte riktigt varför de finns där, dock. De kan vara krångliga att få in.
9. Dra åt styrbultarna igen.
10. Sätt tillbaks dammskydden. Jag lyckades glömma det på båda sidorna, och det går att få på dem när däcket är på plats men varför krångla till det för sig.
11. Sätt dit den nya låsfjädern som du så klart köpte tillsammans med bromsbeläggen.
12. Sätt tillbaks däcket.
13. Efter monteringen, provkör och provbromsa.

Jag bytte belägg på båda sidor bak. Vet inte om det finns någon regel för det, men mitt råd är att alltid byta båda sidorna samtidigt. Fram- och bakbeläggen slits olika så de behöver inte bytas samtidigt, men jag tror det är smart att byta båda bak eller båda fram samtidigt.

Reffen är en gammal dam, så jag nöjde mig med billiga belägg från Mekonomen. Belägg för både vänster och höger bak för 225 kr, samt ny monteringssats (låsfjädern) för en hundring.

Det finns dyrare, och de är sannolikt av högre kvalitet och kanske räcker längre, men med en bil som man inte riktigt vet om den rullar nästa år tycker jag det är onödigt att lägga för mycket pengar.

Hela operationen tog en timme och kostade en 300-hundring så om dessa belägg bara har halva livstiden mot dyrare så är det nog billigare att göra om det om bilen fortfarande rullar.

Weeks, if not days, before the for the mandatory kontrollbesiktning (google it, I don’t know the English term) all kind of warning lights lit up (or at least a service message on the information display) on the Reff. But for once, I thought it would be an easy fix; it was only the left tail light that was out of order.

So, I got some new lights, opened up the access hatch on the inside of the trunk door and ripped the light bulbs out. None seemed broken, but it’s not always that you can see that with the naked eye. I mean, if you can’t be sure there is a current connected to the light bulb. Which I didn’t absolutely, positively new. There could be a burnt out fuse or a broken cable.

So I switched the broken light bulb for a new one. No go. I adjusted the contact springs in the faucet. No go. I twiddled the cables and gave the plastic housing a good thump (which is almost positively a sure thing). Alas, no go.

So I spent half an hour searching for my voltage meter. Gave up the search, tried some things bound to fail, got a little bit frustrated and looked some more for the voltage meter. Gave up the search again, started to wash the car instead.

When done, I ran around the house looking for some other stuff that I didn’t find, but I suddenly did find the voltage meter. A little tip, never look for the stuff you actually need. Look for something else entirely.

But, back to the car, checking the voltage. 10, 11 volts. Fine. It must be the bulbs after all, maybe I should try with the working ones on the right side. Well. No go. The continue to work on the right side, but doesn’t work on the left.

And so it went for a while. Until frustration completely got hold over me, and pushed me to frantically polish all the contact surfaces of the faucets, radically changing the little tin thingies’ that make contact to the light bulb attitude (difficult grammar there, the ’s or ’s or where the hell it should go (we don’t have ’s or s’ in Swedish, so you’ll just have to forgive me and read on)).

Well, anyway, that seemed to do it alright. Suddenly the lights worked wonderfully and no warning on the information panel.

A few things to watch out for whilst trying to rearrange all the electrics in your Saab.

1. Don’t leave the ignition on for more than 20 minutes without the engine running. It will drain the batteries and because of that stop you from driving to the local pizza restaurant for lunch.
2. Don’t muck around with your fingers in your car’s interior mysteries searching for other little lights that you think you might have to replace. The get hot and you’ll burn your fingers. I learned that the hard way.

Writing the title to this post, I realize the extreme hubris I possess. Why the hell would anyone be interested in my mechanical ambitions and Saab ravings? Well, firstly, no one reads these ravings. Secondly… Well, see firstly.

However, I do enjoy them myself. So I will drop a post in here from time to time, and tonight is such a time. For, lo and behold, I have made two mechanical adjustments to the REFF’s younger sister Peewee.

I think I’ve mentioned Peewee before. If not I will waste a few lines of this post to describe her.

Peewee is the REFF’s younger sister by about six years. By milage, however, Peewee outruns the REFF by a hundred thousand kilometers. But even so, while experience may make Peewee a respected girl, wear and tear does – surprisingly – not.

Peewee runs smoothly, shines lustily and purrs softly, while her bad boy brother rustles, ruffles and puffs running down the roads of our current home town.

Even so, she craves and needs the soft attention of this mechanically ambitioned software developer. With wrenches and screwdrivers, pliers and even a hammer, I hoisted her in the air, crawled ’neath and removed her plug. Oil plug, that is.

While her gutted bellows spewed its content into the tub below, I swung on top to rip her cooling regulator out of her system. That is the thermostat, for those of you who fancy the technical term, rather than my dramatized ramblings.

While the blood of Peewee drained into the tub below her, yours truly maliciously enjoyed an Irish Coffee in the warm spring sun.

But this is not a tragedy, but a comedy. The turn is nigh; soon Peewee’s oil plug and filter was replaced, new oil pumped through her heart and cool, new fluid filled her cooling system. A brand new thermostat excellently adjusting her temperature to a perfect 90 degrees Celsius (+/- a few degrees).

It took but an hour and a half, posted little problems during the incision, but the reward, aah, the reward! Smooth running, soft purring and a gentle caress. Indeed, 90 minutes well spent. 

These are the faults and opportunities of improvement on our two Saab cars. Now what in Gods name are these lists on this blog for? Well, the reason is, if you would like to follow the ravings of the Accidental Saab Mechanic, these are the issues that stands to be addressed in the coming series. See? Well… Anyhow, moving on to something completely different…
